On March 16, visitors enjoyed a special open day at the historic Kate Sheppard House exploring the award-winning gardens while raising funds for Christchurch Youth Hub.
Originally the home of suffrage pioneer Kate Sheppard where, from behind the scenes, work for the women’s Christian temperance movement took place. Today this impressive private home carries a Category One Heritage Listing.
The acre of award-winning gardens surrounding the home is the pride and joy of the current owner – Julia Burbury. Featured are rose gardens, native groves and pathways along the Okeover stream, perennial beds, camelia and rhododendron stands, magnificent magnolia, dogwoods and large protected trees, along with an impressive walled vegetable garden.
Entertainment throughout the day included the versatile group, Mixers.
A great time was had by all, with approximately $5000 raised for the Youth Hub project.
